How Far Would You Go for Revenge?
Finley and Betty's Close Friendship survived Fin's ninth grade move from their coastal Maine town to Manhattan. Calls, letters, and a summer visits kept them close, and in the fall of their senior year they both applied to NYU, planning to reunite as roommates. Then Betty Disappears. Her ex-boyfriend Calder admits to drowning her, but his confession is thrown out, and the entire town believes he was coerced and Betty has simply ran away. Fin knows the truth, and she returns to Williston for one final summer, determined to get justice for her friend, even if it means putting her loved ones -and hers.
This book was nowhere on my radar. I was thumbing through the section at a local thrift store and the cover is what reeled me in. A grungy, big claw foot bathtub in the middle of the woods. What speaks suspenseful and psychological thriller does that ? So i read the back of the book and decided $.50 what a steal. Nothing ventured nothing gained, right?
It appealed to me for one reason, I moved away from all my childhood friends between my sophomore and junior years of high school. I would come back but things never felt completely right.
Fin comes back at graduation, her best friend Betty went missing in the fall. The town appears to have gone on without a care or a thought about the missing girl. Almost, as if, she was invisible and that noone cares. Especially her ex-boyfriend Calder.
One person seems to have noticed and wants answers just as much as Fin. Serena, a strange girl who went to Bible Camp with Betty when her parents tried to reform her. Serena and Betty had formed a strange and questionable bond whilst there.
Always in the summer Fin and her friend Owen, who is described as a big brother type, resume their relationship without any questions asked regarding the time apart.
As Fin tries to find out what happened to Betty she incidentally puts those she loves and herself in danger trying to find the answer.
One of the paragraphs I keep returning too is the one given by Silas. "Not everyone is meant to live a long and happy life, Finley. We're born with a certain number of breaths, and when we've used them all up we die. Every year we celebrate our birthdays, but as those months go by, we pass our death days as well. WE just don't know when they are yet."
The passage sticks with me.
I enjoyed the book,it was a great thrift store buy. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a suspense novel.
The opinion in this review is my own thoughts and reflections.
