The Shallows by Matt Goldman

A widow hires Nils Shapiro to investigate her husband's savage murder, but she's not the only one to seek him out.  Everyone from the widow's boyfriend to a polarizing congressional candidate to the FBI wants to know what happened to Todd Rabinowitz.  As Nils unravels the convoluted case, the bodies pile up.  Someone doesn't want him to discover what happened to Todd , and won't stop until they silence Niles as well.

This is a good as a stand-alone but is part of the Nils Shapiro series by author Matt Goldman.

Nils is a gumshoe detective, one day a widow walks into his office and puts him on the case to investigate her husbands death.  He isn't that sure if he even likes the woman but is intrigued enough to start working the case.

Nils, with help from colleagues Annika and Ellegaard, and Minneapolis PD detective Gabriella Nunez they try and figure out the twist and turns of unique spider web of lies, tangles and spins.  Body count is getting higher as they work the case.

I like the authors character development of Nils, Gabriella, and his colleagues of Stone Investigations. I felt the old black and white mystery, or at least that is how I visioned it in my mind.

If you are looking for a solid mystery Matt Goldman's Nils Shapiro series is just what you would want to seek your teeth into.

I won this Advanced Copy through Goodreads giveaway and Forge.

this is me....

When I was growing up, in a small town in Kansas, Saturdays were the days I looked forward to.   My mom would take me with her to the beauty parlor, I would venture across the street to the library. As you would walk into the two story old brick building, the smell of history would waft up as the door would swoosh open and closed.  A faint smell of mold or mildew, mixed in with the other mysterious smells were like a comfortable pair of shoes I would slip into. The librarian, Miss Jane Blades, always welcomed each and every patron with a "Good Morning" and when she seen it was me, she would just smile.  When I was the younger girl, 2nd or 3rd grade, she would have books picked out for me based on the level she knew I could read.  As I got older she had projects for me to do, in case I got bored, or too loud, but mainly it was to make me feel special.  The two story building, made of brick, was like my castle.  Tucked in the wooden shelves, we...

A Perfect Summer Read ~ 5 Star Read

Becc was a good girl. A dedicated student. Aspiring reporter. Always where she was supposed to be. Until a secret affair with the charming Cal one summer in college cost her everything she held dear: her journalism dreams; her relationship with her best friend, Eric; and her carefully imagined future. Now Becc's  past is front and center as she travels up the scenic California coast to a wedding--with a man she has seen in a decade. As each mile flies by, Becc can't help but  feel the thrilling push and pull of  memories, from the infinite nights at beach bonfires and lavish boat parties to secret movie sessions. But the man beside her is not so eager to re-create history. And  as the events of that heartbreaking summer come into view, Becc must decide if those dazzling hours they once shared are worth fighting for or if they're lost forever. I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Becc. I, at times, could identify with her as I was at that juncture of lea...
